News Update for 12/13/21

A 34-year-old Avon Park resident reportedly died last night when he was hit by a car. Florida Highway Patrol reports say the man apparently was kneeling in the outside lane of Highway 27 near Lake Byrd Road, when he was hit by a southbound sport utility vehicle, driven by a 72-year-old man from Sebastopol, California.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges in the incident were listed.

Sebring Police are reporting that a suspect has been arrested in connection with last week’s homicide in The City on the Circle. With the assistance of the Palm Beach County’s Sheriff’s office, Rodney Michael Demeritte jr was taken into custody on Saturday.
It is believed that Demeritte killed a man in his home on Nancessowee Street in Sebring, then took his car. It reportedly was found in the Boynton Beach area
Sebring police have released no details on the death investigation at this time.

It looks to be a long night for the Avon Park city council this evening. Among other things, they will look at changes for their lien reduction policy in code enforcement and will look at new regulations for commercial water & sewer service – and for disconnection of service for those who fail to pay.
Also on the agenda for this evening are a couple code enforcement hearings and a request from the Highlands County Economic Development Department on a pair of grant applications.

Another Christmas tradition is set tonight in the City of Charm. Avon Park will host Christmas in the Park on the shores of Lake Verona this evening beginning at 6:00.
Performances are scheduled by the Dolphin Ensemble of Avon Elementary, The Memorial Elementary Music Makers, plus the Park Elementary Panther Chorus. Also slated to sing are The
Avon Park Middle School Choir, the Sweet Adelines, and the Avon Park High School Choir.
The Avon Park High School Grenadier Band will round out the evening.
