News Update for 2/14/22

It appears to be a consequential meeting for the Avon Park city council tonight, with a number of items of importance up before the board. They’ll hear the second and final reading of a measure that will put teeth in their code enforcement citations in an effort to clean up the City of Charm. In other action, the board will hear a report on the pending action to turn the operation of their airport over to Florida Airport management; they’ll also mull over requests for proposals to sell the downtown Brickell Building and look at approving three major events there.

Units from Avon Park Lakes, West Sebring, the Avon Park Bombing Range and the Florida Forest Service teamed up to put down a brush fire off Avon Pines and Riverdale Road over the weekend.
Apparently, a pile burn got out of control and charred about six acres before they finally got it out. A number of structures received minor damage. No injuries were reported.

A bad accident up in Frostproof yesterday. According to reports, a couple of motorcycles collided head-on – on Lewis Griffin Road.
Both riders were airlifted out. No names or other details have yet been released.

Highlands County Sheriffs are in search of an experienced Emu trapper. Apparently one of the big birds has been running loose through the orange groves near Altvader and Bonnet Lake roads since the weekend.
So far, the Emu has eluded efforts to capture it. Sheriff’s officials say they are looking for the owners to take it home…

Qualifying for a couple of municipal elections opens today. In Frostproof, a three-year term for Position 1 is up for grabs. To qualify, you must be a qualified voter in the Friendly City.
In Lake Wales, voters will have an opportunity to choose a new mayor and a District 4 city commissioner.
Qualifying opens today in both cities and closes Friday. Both elections will be April 5th.
