News Update for 2/8/22

Some big booms are slated today out at the Avon Park Bombing Range. A number of explosive ordinance detonations, or "EODs" are planned for today out at the facility.
Meanwhile, air exercises began in the mid morning hours and are scheduled to run until fairly late tonight.

It’s Day Five of the Highlands County Fair with more livestock competition on tap. Slated for tonight will be the Market Steer Show – that’ll get underway in the Livestock Arena at 6:30.
In last night’s Commercial Heifer Show, Grand Champion went to a Heifer shown by Hana Sheffield, Regan Richard’s entry was declared Reserve Champion – she also picked up Senior Showmanship Honors.
Other entertainment will include the Wolves of the world exposition, Scott’s World of Magic and the Street Drum Corps. And of course there’s a full slate of fun rides from Reithoffer.
This is another half-price day, with gate admission set at just four dollars. Gates will open at 5pm.

A bad collision in Avon Park last night reportedly sent two to the hospital. A Sport Utility Vehicle and a pickup collided at the intersection of Highway 27 and Hal MacRae Blvd in the City of Charm.
The force of the impact caused the truck to roll over on its roof. The southbound lanes of Highway 27 were closed for a time while crews cleared the scene.
Florida Highway Patrol officials have not released the extent of injuries or any further details on the incident.

The intersection of Highway 98 and Arbuckle Creek Road was blocked for a time early this morning when a truck hit a deer. The driver was not injured, however, the deer reportedly was killed.
