It’s Thursday at the Highlands County Fair, that means the Junior Livestock Auction will be held in the pavillion beginning at 6pm.
Sponsored by Heartland National Bank, most all the animals shown at the fair this year will go on the auction block to the highest bidder. It’s the youngsters’ chance to make back the money spent in raising their project.
To help out, many people and businesses contribute cash for "add-ons" to increase the final purchase price.
Also tonight, local recording artist Corey Greenway will take to the stage on the Independent Midway. He’ll be performing from 6-9 this evening.
A Lake Placid man again has been arrested on drug charges. Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies say Maurice Oxendine was charged after a search warrant turned up a cache of drugs at his Cochrane Drive home.
Among other things, deputies found cocaine, MDVP -also known as "Molly," Xanax and Fetanyl. He has been charged with trafficking, possession with intent to sell and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony – in addition to other counts.
He was booked into the Highlands County jail.
Highlands County commissioners have voted to declare another 300-plus county owned lots as surplus and sold off. Most of the lots are in the Sun ‘N Lake Improvement District and came to the county through the tax deed process.
Commissioner Scott Kirouac made an impassioned plea to take some of the revenues, and apply them to the paving of Schumacher Road in an effort to provide a new southern enterance to the housing project.
Commissioner Arlene Tuck expressed concerns about previous financial mismanagement there, while commissioner Don Elwell said he wanted additional information before making any other decisions on allocations.
How the money may be spent will come back to commissioners at a later date.
