News Update for 2/9/24

A woman reportedly was injured shortly after midnight this morning while trying to not hit an animal. She reportedly crashed her car on County Road 731 after swerving to avoid the critter.
The unidentified driver reportedly was airlifted out to a trauma center.

There have been exercises all this week at the Avon Park Air Force Range. While it’s been a secret who’s out there, it’s no secret it’s been going on. Residents in Avon Park and Sebring have been remarking about the explosions – some big enough to rattle windows and shake houses for miles around.
Reportedly, they’ll continue working out there again today.

It’s the last couple days at the Highlands County Fair. Slated from 6-to-9 this evening will be music from Justin Grimes in the Budweiser Hospitality Tent sponsored by Spray & Pray Guns & Ammo. At 9pm a Piano Juggler will be on the Sebring Firemen’s stage.
It’s the last chance to see Magic by Nelson, the Sea Lion Splash, as well as the blacksmithing and chain saw artists displays.
The fair winds up tomorrow.
Some big money spent at the Junior Livestock Auction last night, as the Grand Champion steer shown by Autumn Renyolds went for over $11,000.

It’s going to be a big weekend starting tomorrow, not only will Strapped For Cash be playing on the last day of the Highlands County Fair, the 37th Annual Civillian Conservation Corps festival will be held at Highlands Hammock State Park.
The park’s signature event will feature music from the Sebring High School Jazz Band, the Avon Park High Show Choir and the Heart of Highlands Show Chorus.
There will be vendors and exhibitors including quilting, spinning and blacksmitting. Also offered will be pony rides, carriage rides and tram rides – plus plenty of food. That will run from 10-4.
A pair of early Valentine events also are planned. It’s Lovers Night at NASGRASS Florida Flywheeler’s Park for the monthly lawn racing event. Heat races will begin at 3pm with features slated to start at 6:00.
In Frostproof, recording artist Corey Greenway & The Outta Hand Band will headline the annual Street Dance on Wall Street. In addition to food truck, this year, organizers have added a Jeep Show & Shine. That gets started in the Friendly City at 6pm.
