News Update for 24 March 2022

Highlands is one of ten counties that has been declared under a severe storm watch for the balance of the day. It stretches down the Gulf Coast from Pasco to Lee counties and inward as far as Polk and Highlands Counties.
Residents are being warned that an approaching cold front may bring thunderstorms, heavy rains and high winds as it sweeps through the Sunshine State.
The weather activity is expected this afternoon and this evening.

Quick work by firefighters yesterday suppressed a pair of brush fires before they became a real problem.
Units from Highlands Park and Sun ‘N Lake South reponded to the scene off Bottlebrush Avenue in Lake Placid to quell the flames.
They were able to keep it to a quarter acre. Cause of the fire has not been released.
Another fire off Coral Ridge Road in Spring Lake was knocked down by Desoto City firefighters. That one also has been listed at a quarter acre.
That fire apparently started after a teenager and his brother shot a flare gun into a field. No structures were damaged and injuries were reported in either incident.

As officials of the Sebring International Raceway bask in the success of this year’s SuperSebring 2022, some of the secondary awards are being announced. Officials from CrowdStrike have bestowed honors on JDC-Miller Motorsports, Racing Team Nederland, JR III Racing, Corvette Racing and Gradient Racing awarding them the "Endurance Teamwork & Speed Award.
The honor is bestowed to a team in each class that is running at the finish with the lowest cumulative qualifying time, fastest lap time, and quickest time on pit lane. The trophies only are given during IMSA endurance races.
It’s not over, raceway officials are preparing for this weekend when Chin Track Days has their event at the historic circuit.
