News Update for 3/18/21

Highway 70 was shut down for a time early this morning due to a three car crash. The incident occurred shortly before 7:30AM just east of the Lonesome Island Road.
At least two people had to be transported as a result of the accident. The Florida Highway Patrol has released no other information on the crash.

Those in search of the Coronavirus vaccine will have an opportunity to get a shot today. The State of Florida will have a site set up at the Avon Park Community Center.
It will be open today, tomorrow and Wednesday from 9am until 5pm. They will accommodate both drive-ins and walk ins. There will be 20 nurses on hand to help things go smoothly . At this time, it’s unknown which of the varieties of vaccines will be dispensed.
Officials say they will have an EMS crew standing by in the event of an adverse reaction.

Today officially begins Race Week here in Highlands County. Actually it began this past weekend with the NASGRASS Lawn Mower Snowbird Nationals at the Avon Park Airport. Nearly 100 mowers from as far north as Ohio came in for the annual event
There also was weekend competition at the Sebring International Raceway, including the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America. and the IMSA Prototype Challenge.
This coming Saturday will be the 69th running of the Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring. Tomorrow, fans will be allowed to line up for Wednesday, when gates open at the track for the big race.

A Lake Wales man has been arrested on numerous counts, after a search of his home turned up drugs and a stolen firearm. Police in the Crown Jewel of the Ridge were called to the D Street home of Johnny Hamilton, after a woman said she had been drugged and assaulted there.
Apparently, the house belongs to Hamilton’s mother who permitted the search. Inside, officers found a half pound of methamphetamine, in addition to a pistol, a stolen rifle plus other illegal items and substances.
Hamilton was charged with drug possession and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon among other things.
