News Update for 3/19/21

Action picks up in earnest today at the Sebring International Raceway with a full slate of competition as well as qualifying laps for the 69th running of the Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring.
The second round of both the Mazda MX-5 and Porsche Carerra Cup will run today as well as the Alan Jay 120 Endurance Race for the Michelin Cup Series.
Prototypes and GT Cars will run to set the field for tomorrow’s big race – remember, we’ll be carrying that flag-to-flag here at the Highlands Radio Group.

A new organization has been formed locally with an eye toward helping Highlands County celebrate it’s centennial. The Heritage Associaton of Highlands County is planning a 100th birthday celebration at the Edna Pearce Lockett Estate next month.
Represented among the members are the Sebring and Avon Park historical societies as well as the Historic Preservation Commission.
Currently set for the April event are music, speakers, food plus historic displays.

Highlands County sheriffs’ deputies, reponding to a burglary call, arrested a suspected drug dealer. The incident occurred yesterday in the Desoto City area south of Sebring.
Deputies found 24-year-old Keneth Cook near the Granada Avenue address. In his backpack they found marjuana, methamphetamine, plus baggies and a scale.
He faces counts of burglary, drug posession and traficking as well as violation of probation charges.

Highlands County officials have announced a program to recruit volunteers for their fire/rescue service. Applicants must be 18 years of age and able to pass a background check. The county then will use tax money to fund their instruction of Florida Firefighter One certification.
Although the position initially is unpaid, certain incentives may be offered after certification is complete. Those interested may apply online through the county’s internet web page.

An endangered Florida panther has died after being struck by a vehicle in Hardee County. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says it’s the fifth panther death attributed to fatal collisions, out of seven total deaths this year.
Wildlife officials say the remains of the panther were found on a rural road near Wauchula.
