News Update for 3/5/21

Governor Ron Desantis made a whistle stop appearance in Highlands County yesterday. In a press conference held outside the Coronavirus Vaccine POD at the old JC Penny store in the Lakeshore Mall, Desantis said he has been working with new Florida House Representative Kaylee Tuck. He promised a “surge” of an additional 3,700 doses of vaccine – aimed at local seniors.
Looking at the statistics, the governor said that inoculating seniors equated saving lives. He called the Highlands County operation “efficient and effective,” and said he wanted to get local inoculations up over 50-percent of the senior population here.

Today is Day 2 of Vet Jam 2021. Being held at Lakeshore Mall, organizers say bands will beginning at 2:00 and continue on into the night. Also on tap is a beanbag toss competition. Tomorrow will be more live music with a bike show and poker run. Vet Jam 2021 winds up Sunday with a car show and yet more bands.

It was 40 years ago today that a rookie Frostproof police officer lost his life in the line of duty. Patrolman Henry David McCall had been called to the First Federal Bank branch there in response to an alarm.
According to reports, he was shot and killed before he ever got out of his cruiser. Despite an intense manhunt – the suspects never have been prosecuted. Reportedly, a prime suspect died while in prison.

Officials of the Sebring International Raceway have announced some more star power for this year’s Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring. Country music star Lee Greenwood will be performing the National Anthem before the start of this year’s endurance race.
Earlier, it was announced that Major League Baseball standout and favorite son Thomas “Flash” Gordon will serve as this year’s Grand Marshal of the Race.
