Hold on to your hat! Highlands County officials are warning residents that some blustry weather may be moving through the area today. Wind and thunderstorms are expected later this afternoon with a "marginal risk" of severe weather.
They warn unsecured objects outside may get blown about a bit.
The long arm of the Highlands County Sheriff’s office reached out yesterday and nabbed a suspect wanted in Connecticut. Deputies spotted the suspect vehicle yesterday near College Drive and pulled over 40-year-old James William Black.
The Myakka City man is a suspect in a hit-n-run accicent that occurred last month in North Branford, Connecticut, which claimed the live of a 65-year-old man.
Black was taken into custody and booked into the Highlands County jail, pending extradition to Connecticut.
During this week’s Highlands County school board meeting, Superintendent Brenda Longshore called on Assistant Superintendent of Business Operations Angelica Tannengero to explain a number of spending issues, after questions arose over $3.8 million in Elementary & Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds.
Apparently, the money is not being returned – as has been alleged – the money just was not spent. Tannengero told the board that the Florida Department of Education pulled the grants before the system could spend all the allocated funds.
Residents of the city of Avon Park and Sebring Ridge reportedly are under a precautionary boil water notice. City officials called for the action following a water main break in the "fish streets," just off Valerie Blvd.
There was a water outtage in the area while repairs were made. The boil water notice remains in effect until tests come back positive.
