Earlier this month, Highlands County Superintendent of Schools Brenda Longshore called off a workshop about sex education in the schools after she announced she had decided to cancel a contract with the "I Make A Difference Program," which had been handling the curriculum for the past six years.
Tonight, the matter will be revisited as the Highlands County Republican Executive Committee’s Faith Engagement Committee and PointNorth hold an Education Issues Forum. That will run from 6:30 to 8:00 this evening at the Ministry Center – located at the intersection of State Road 66 and Sparta Road South of Sebring.
Parents, educators and citizens are expected to be there to hear more about the issues involved over the course of the program.
Much has been made about a housing shortage in Highlands County. Avon Park city council members are doing their best to alleviate the problem. They gave the go-ahead to officials of Noble Land Development to go ahead and construct some 250 new houses in the city of charm.
The single family dwellings will go in on 35-acres of land on the east corner of A. Miracle and Winthrop streets. There were conditions involved ranging from a traffic study to buffers and set-backs. No word on when construction might begin.
Another brush fire in Highlands County. This time units from Desoto City, Placid Lakes and Lorida responded to the call off Cowhouse Road. Ther flames charred about an acre of ground before firefighters knocked it down. Apparently – it was started by a lawnmower.
We’re still in the dry season, and the Florida
Forest Service has listed Highlands as one of nine south Florida counties that are in "Very High" danger of wildfires.
South Florida State College has been ranked in the Top 25 short-list for the bi-annual Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The million-dollar Aspen Prize is thought to be the signature recognition of community colleges that are improving and achieving equitable outcomes for students.
The Top 25 only has three Florida schools; SFSC, Broward College and Tallahassee Community College. After extensive reviews, the winner will be announced in the spring of next year.
