News Update for 5/11/22

Officials at the Avon Park Air Force Range say you’ll be seeing – and hearing – more planes in the area today. Training exercises began in the mid-morning and will continue until very late tonight.
Types of planes and who’s flying them was not revealed, but they say noise levels will be highly elevated.

A new report by the firm Construction Coverage shows that the Avon Park-Sebring metro area has shown a double-digit increase in both manufacturing employment and gross domestic product over the past decade.
Between 2010 and 2020, manufacturing employment here increased by better than 20-percent and the manufacturing GDP jumped nearly 14-percent. That made for a composite score of 44.3.
Those numbers topped the national averages of six-percent employment growth and 12-percent GDP growth respectively over the same time period.

Avon Park city council members are continuing their "get-tough" policies with homeowners who let their houses fall into disrepair. They voted 4-1 to begin foreclosure proceedings against the owner of a residence on North Delaney Avenue that neighbors say has been a problem for years.

Although there has been some movement in cleaning the place up – officials say it’s a case of too little too late. Owners still will have a chance to do some work. Officials say the foreclosure process takes a bit of time.

Candidates are coming out of the woodwork to run for local office, but local officials say residents don’t have to stand for election to serve their fellow citizens. There are committees for the cities of Avon Park, Sebring and the Town of Lake Placid – as well as boards for the county and the district school system that are looking for people to serve.
Board vacancies and availabilities are posted on each of the respective websites, or residents may wish to call individual entities.

Excitement is coming to Highlands County this weekend when the Florida State Cornhole Tournament comes to town. It all starts this Friday at the new Bernie Little Distributors facility in Sebring.
Apparently it will be the first major event there since construction began back in February.
Competition for women singles, competitive singles, seniors, advanced and intermediate doubles will be held over the course of the three-day event.
It’s being sponsored by the American Cornhole League. Pre-registration is online through the ACL player app.
