School’s out for the summer! Officials of the Highlands County Schools say not only is today the last day of school, it also is an early release day.
That means motorists are advised to look for additiona activity including youngsters walking and riding bicycles.

A new race team has formed here in Highlands County – and their wheels will barely touch the ground.
The Sebring Airport and the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo are sponsoring two legs of the Air Race Classic for Joanne Alcorn & Kathy Howitt – better known as “The Flamingo Flyers.”
The pair will be flying their Cessna Skyhawk in the annual all-women, 2,656-mile cross-country airplane race. It starts June 19 in Texas & ends June 22 in Maine – with nine stops inbetween.

According to reports, Highlands County Sheriff Paul Blackman has made a single-handed animal rescue. While driving down Main Street in Avon Park yesterday, the sheriff reportedly spotted a dead possum in an empty parking space.
After seeing movement, he turned around and came back to the scene and found seven babies still clinging to their mother. They were transferred to Animal Services, who may in turn send them to a state facility.
