News Update for 5/31/21

This is Memorial Day, and there will be observances today throughout the county.
At 1:00 this afternoon, American Legion Post 69 hold their ceremonies at the post home on West Bell Street in Avon Park.
At 9:00 this morning a ceremony and cookout was held at the sprawling Lakeview Memorial Gardens.
The observances are designed to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country – and to remind citizens what Memorial Day is all about.
At 3:00 this afternoon, a nationwide moment of silence will be held for those who died in service of their country.

Turning in a neighbor for a code enforcement violation and staying anonymous won’t be an option for much longer.
A new law that passed during this year’s Florida Legislative session will require those filing a complaint to include their name and address in the official complaint.
The measure goes into effect July first. Highlands County officials say it won’t prevent code enforcement officers from going out and citing a property owner for violations they observe.

Despite some weekend rains around the county – it’s still pretty dry out there. Local officials are cautioning people to be very careful with barbecues and any outdoor burning.
Crews from the Florida Forest service and local firefighters were called out Saturday to a brush fire off Citrus Boulevard at Sun ‘N Lake South. One home had to be evacuated while the flames were brought under control.
There were no injuries and ultimately, no structures were damaged.

One person was injured over the weekend in a traffic crash on the south end of the county. The car went out of control and overturned at the intersection of Bradbury Road and Highway 27 near Venus.
The victim was transported to an area hospital. Florida Highway Patrol officials have released no other details on the mishap.

A Bradenton man has been killed in a weekend traffic accident in Hardee County. The mishap occurred yesterday At US 17 and Golf Boulevard in Zolfo Springs. According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, the car, driven by the 25-year-old Bradenton resident, slammed into the back of a trailer being pulled by a pickup.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
