News Update for 5/9/22

Avon Park city council members will be talking about the city charter when they meet this evening in regular session. Mayor Garrett Anderson wants to talk about term lenghts and term limits for council members.

Currently, board members serve three year terms, which puts them out of synch with the regular election cycle. They also have no upward limit on how long they can sit on the dias.

The Highlands County election season is heating up with another newcomer tossing her hat into the ring. Nicole Radonski has filed her paperwork to run for the Highlands County School Board seat currently held by Jill Compton-Twist.
Radonski, a former teacher, is a parent unhappy with some of the school’s curriculum – especially the sex education being offered.
She is the second person to challenge an incumbent school board member. Jeremy Daughtery has filed to run against first term school board member Isaac Durrance.

A Lake Placid man escaped serious injury in a 3-vehicle mishap in Glades County. Florida Highway Patrol reports indicate the 55-year-old driver hit a van that had run a stop sign at the intersection of US 27 and State Road 78.
The passenger in a third vehicle. a 58-year-old Tampa man was killed when the car he was riding in was gathered up into the crash. The accident remains under investigation.

The City of Lake Wales has been awarded nearly $1.2 million to widen sidewalks and footpaths in the Northwest Neighborhood to increase the safety of pedestrians on designated walking spaces.
The Crown Jewel of the Ridge is one of ten Florida communities to receive funding through the Rural Infrastructure and the Community Development Block Grant – CV program, administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
Construction on the sidewalks is set to begin this year. Plans include rehabilitating preexisting sidewalks. New sidewalks will be added along established streets without sidewalks.
