News Update for 6/19/19

A Sebring icon has passed away. Chamber of Commerce officials have announced the death of Thelma Pyle. For nearly half a century Pyle was synonomous with the chamber as an employee and volunteer. She also served for nearly a decade on the Sebring city council.

A social media post has indicated that Highlands County Animal Services is full and is prepared to start euthanizing. Officials there say that’s not exactly true. There still are a couple of pens open, but they are urging anybody who has lost a dog or a cat to check with them, and see if it’s there.

Autopsy results have been released, and Polk County Sheriff’s officials now say it appears 22-year-old Kara Fay Hanvey of Sebring was hit by a vehicle. In any event – they want to know how it happened.
The Sebring woman’s body was found in the median strip of US 92 East in Lakeland this past Saturday. Polk Sheriff’s deputies say they want to know why she was in Lakeland this past weekend – and if anybody saw the vehicle that hit her.

Two people were killed and two others seriously injured yesterday in a Hardee County traffic accident. Florida Highway Patrol officials say a car driven by 23-year-old Angel Miguel Ortiz pulled from Maxwell Road, onto US 17 and into the path of an oncoming pickup.
Both Ortiz and a passenger, 26-year-old Jessica Maxine Cochran were killed. A passenger, 3-year-old Arabella Ortiz was critically injured. She was flown to All Children’s Hospital.
The driver of the truck, 59-year-old Bertha Zamora was seriously injured and taken to Lakeland Regional. All the victims are from Wauchula.

Congressman Greg Steube, whose district includes Highlands County, has filed legislation he believes will cut down fraud in postumous Social Security benefits. Under Steube’s measure, federal agencies would have to verify eligibility for recipients claiming to be 105 years or older.
Steube says the idea is to try and cut down on those recieving benefits from people who have died. So far, the measure has not recieved a committee hearing.
