Two people were killed last night in a traffic crash in the south end of the county. Florida Higway patrol officials say a car driven by a Lakeland man had slowed to make a U-Turn on State Road 70 near County Road 721, and was hit from behind by a car driven by a Fort White woman. She was killed, as was a passenger in the Lakeland man’s car. Troopers say the 15-year-old Lakeland girl apparently was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Qualifying has wrapped up in Highlands County and there are a couple of ladies who won’t have to campaign. Both Highlands County Supervisor of Elections Karen Healy and District 55 Florida Representative Kaylee Tuck were returned to office.
Neither drew any opposition for the upcoming election cycle. Healy had been promoted to Highlands County Supervisor of Elections following the death of former supervisor Penny Ogg.
This will be Tuck’s second term in office.
Frostproof city council members will be preparing for growth when they get together this evening in regular session. They’ll be looking at approving a couple of measures that will change the zoning in more than 35 acres of property from County Agricultural to City low density residential.
9.5 acres are located off County Road 630A, with another, nearly 26-acre site, off Armbruster Court. They’ll also be presented with a request to rezone an acre of property off the North Scenic Highway from Commercial to Industrial.
In other action, they’ll look at a resolution to make Frostproof a "Second Amendment Sanctuary City," affirming the city’s support for the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution for the right to keep and bear arms.
