A sad end to the Father’s Day weeKend in Avon Park with a double shooting last night. Apparently a 21-year-old man and a 16-year old boy were hit. Highlands County sheriff’s officials say the incident occurred about 9:30 in the area of Hal MacRae Blvd and Delaney Avenue.
Both the victims were airlifted to a trauma center, but are expected to recover. Sheriff’s detectives reportedly still are trying to unravel what happened.
A double shooting incident in Lake Wales last night has claimed a life. That one occurred near D Street and Dr. J.A. Wiltshire Avenue. Police in the Crown Jewel of the Ridge have released no names. They only will say that one person was killed and another was injured.
They are looking for additional information in that incident.
The Sebring Regional Airport had a distinguished alumni drop by this weekend. Phillip Moyer once trained at the facility when it was the Hendricks Field bomber training facility. The 97-year-old Moyer flew B-17s here – then went on the command 35 missions in the European Theater during World War II.
Moyer went on to work in architecture and might best be known for his design for the Vehicle Assembly Building at Cape Canaveral.
Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies were busy last night in Avon Park. According to reports, a gator showed up at a home on Lake Verona Blvd. Lawmen corralled the uninvited guest and re-located him to Lake Pioneer without incident.
The sheriff’s office provides law enforcement to the City of Charm under a contractual arrangement.
Motorists on Highway 27 south of Sebring will be inconvenienced this evening for a time. Crews will be installing a signal mast arm at the U.S. 27-Sebring Parkway intersection in front of Highlands Regional Medical Center.
The work will require the closure of the two outside lanes on southbound U.S. 27. Traffic will be diverted to the inside travel lane.
