Motorists who use Memorial Drive between Sebring and Avon Park need to find a different route beginning today. The county today begins the first of three traffic circles to be located along the length of the Sebring Parkway.
There’s no word on how long the construction will take, but there will be a detour around the area provided. However, county officials are recommending just to take Highway 17 or Highway 27.

It comes as little surprise, but the Avon Park city council has moved ahead to hire Gerald Buhr as their full time attorney. The vote was 4-1 with councilwoman Brenda Gray dissenting.
The contract was basically what Buhr had in the past, before he was replaced by a previous council. Buhr also serves as legal council for the cities of Bowling Green, Zolfo Springs and San Antonio Florida.

It appears part of another motion picture may be filmed here in Highlands County. Apparently, extras are being sought for a “bar scene” in the upcoming “science fiction action drama” entitled “Thalon.”
Reportedly, the scene will involve an ” off-world bar.” producers have picked Dimitris in Sebring as the setting. Those interested must be available from 5am until noon on June 24. They say they want people who are “dressed down” and “set to go clubbing.”

Highlands County firefighters and Florida Forest Service crews used a controlled burn to stop an uncontrolled burn this weekend. It apparently began as a vehicle fire that turned into a fast-moving brush fire near South Munson and Nye roads. It had charred four acres before Highlands Lakes and West Sebring firefighters arrived at the scene.
By the time it was all over, 10-acres were consumed. There was no structure damage and no injuries were reported.

A Lake Worth woman was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash south of Lake Placid. Florida Highway Patrol reports indicate a car driven by 63-year-old Rosetta Scott was stopped without her lights in the middle of State Road 70, and was hit broadside by an oncoming pickup.
Scott reportedly was flown out to Lawnwood Medical Center in “serious” condition. There’s no word on why she was stopped across the road. Charges in the incident are pending.
