News Update for 7/11/22

Highlands County Sheriff’s detectives are trying to unravel the details of a shooting incident. Apparently, it happened early this morning off Wilson Way NorthEaste in the Placid Lakes community.
Reportedly one person sustained minor injuries and another has been arrested. The incident remains under investigation.

Avon Park city council members tonight will take a look at what it’s cost them so far to turn their airport over to a private management firm. City staff is slated to give a report on total payments to date to outside legal counsel and airport consultants to broker a deal with Florida Airport Management to run the airport and industrial park.
The idea was that the arrangement would save – or even make money for the city.
In other action, the council will mull over purchasing fire hydrants and water meters for the city.

A 37-year-old Lake Wales man has been killed in a weekend traffic crash. According to reports, G.W. Sowell was eastbound on Buckmoore Road when he clipped the back of a car while trying to pass.
Sowell was thrown off the Harley Davidson, which then hit two other vehicles. He was taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities say the Lake Wales man was not wearing a helmet or any other protective gear. They say speed may have been a factor in the crash.

A Lake Wales woman has died in a Lake Alfred traffic crash. 49-year-old Patricia Bixler reportedly died yesterday afternoon when her van hit a concrete4 utility pole.

It’s not always about fighting fires. The Frostproof Fire Department was called out this past weekend to save a distressed boater on Lake Reedy.
Firefighters launched marine one and towed the boat back to the boat ramp where they then assisted the boaters with loading the craft.
The nature of the emergency was not disclosed.
