News Update for 7/19/19

Highlands County’s first responders have been busy overnight. In addition to a spate of medical calls, there were at least two traffic incidents.
One person was taken to the hospital last night when a couple of vehicles came together at the intersection of Main Street and North Lake Avenue in Avon Park. The force of the impact flipped one onto its side.
Later, there was an incident involving two motorcycles – nobody was seriously injured in that one.

Sebring Middle School’s the scene of quite a bit of action today as the Highlands County Sheriff’s office hold a large-scale training exercise.
Personnel from the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, Sebring Police Department, Sebring Fire Department, Highlands County Fire Rescue and the School Board of Highlands County all are part in an active shooter training scenario.
Many first responders’ vehicles are in the area of the school -both on and off campus – in emergency mode. Youngsters are out of school for the summer – so authorities took the opportunity to hone their skills and test various security protocols.

A Highlands County resident has been appointed as the new chairman of the Florida Board of Education. Andy Tuck, former Highlands County School Board member and citrusman is the first new chairman of the board in four years. He replaces Marva Johnson of Winter Garden, who held the post since 2015 and was barred from continuing as chair.
Tuck said he pledged to especially watch out for the needs of small and rural school districts – like Highlands.
