News Update for 7/23/21

An early morning crash closed State Road 17 in both directions for several hours between Avon Park and Sebring. Officials say at least two people were transported to area hospitals as a result of the single vehicle rollover.
The mishap occurred just before 4:00 near the intersection of State Road 17 and San Miguel Street by the old drive-in theater.
Florida Highway Patrol officials say a report will be issued later.

Units from West Sebring and Sun ‘N Lake were called to an early morning fire in the Bird Streets. When they arrived at the single family frame dwelling on Sparrow Avenue west of Sebring, they found smoke coming from the home and a resident saying someone was trapped inside.
A Sun ‘N Lake firefighter went inside the structure, located the individual, then dragged them out. The victem was air-lifted to a trauma center in serious condition.
The State Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to determine the cause of the blaze. Damage was set at $10,000.

It all begins this morning at 10:00 – That’s when the opening ceremonies will take place at the Gazebo in Lake Placid for the 30th annual Caladium Festival.
Dozens of vendors will be set up with food, arts & crafts, consumer goods and of course – plenty of caladiums. A show for classic, vintage and custom cars and bikes will be held on Saturday and there will be tours of the caladium fields – just before harvest – throughout the three day event.
This will be the first Caladium Festival in two years, and organizers expect turnout to be brisk.

Nearly 30 people have been arrested – more than a dozen from Lake Wales – on drug, weapons and other counts. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says it was result a 16-month undercover investigation of a group known as the “Bell Gang.”
Deputies recovered 22-pounds of pot, more than four pounds of methamphetamine, nearly two pounds of cocaine and other illicit drugs. Value there set at better than a quarter million dollars.
Lawmen also recovered 11 firearms two of which were stolen. Three suspects remain at large. Judd says the investigation is continuing.

The Inaugural Drag & Fly car event is slated for this Sunday at the Ridge Landing Airpark in Frostproof. Drag races will be eighth mile runs and a car show also is planned.
