Today is Independence Day – the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and there will be three area communities holding their observances.
In Sebring, The Highlands Little Theatre will start by hosting their annual free Patriotic Revue. Shows run every hour on the hour from 11 AM until 3 PM.
They will have hot dogs, brats and other refreshments for sale. Those proceeds will go to benefit the theatre’s scholarship fund.
Later, they will host a Fireworks Viewing Party starting at 7 PM at Frank’s Deck, behind the Highlands Lakeside Theatre. Sebring’s fireworks begin at 9pm.
Lake Placid will be setting off their fireworks this evening at 9pm – over beautiful Lake June.
Hardee County will be presenting their very first Red, White, & Boom Independence Day celebration this evening at Pioneer Park.
Those activities will begin at 4pm with a wiffle ball tournament.
Desoto City firefighters and others were called to the Sebring Regional Airport yesterday for an incident. An ultralight aircraft made what was termed "a hard landing" on the runway there. The Lockwood Air-Cam skittered down the runway before overturning.
Apparently, the plane was pretty badly beat up. The pilot was transported to the hospital. No word as to their condition.
Lake Wales police are searching for an "armed and dangerous" man they say shot at a group of people outside of the Garden Apartments Friday night. One person was injured in the incident.
Detectives have identified 27-year-old Aaron Garrison of Bartow as the accused shooter. They are asking anyone who knows him and his location to call the Lake Wales police department.
You have heard of AMBER alerts, Blue Alerts, Silver Alerts and Sex Offender Alerts, now, thanks to a Highlands County woman, there are Purple Alerts.
They began last Friday and are notifications that go out when an adult, suffering from mental or developmental disabilities is missing.
Beverly Marshall started her crusade back in August of 2018, after her 30-year-old son Josh, who had cognitive issues was found drown in a pond.
The first such alert went out Friday, when a 52-year-old William Miller of Lake Placid went missing.
