News Update for 8/1/21

The action continues again today at the Avon Park Air Force Range as jets will continue training today until very late tonight. Officials at the range say noise levels will be noticable. They again did not say what units are running sorties over the facility

Highlands County commissioners this morning voted to set the tentative milage rate of 8.1 – or $8.10 for each $1,000 of taxable valuation on homes, businesses and other properties.
Commissioner Don Elwell suggested a plan that could bring the milage rate down to 7.7. The money would come from the projected budget savings, with some of the money for a milate cut, and the remainder to to go recreation and several other programs.
The commission still could take action before final milage ratification, which will come August 15.

While the state of Florida continues to grow in population, not all areas are experiencing a boom. In fact, some places are shrinking. Numbers now show that Hardee County is one of the top 10 counties in the Sunshine state which actually is losing population.
From 2010 to 2020, Hardee County reportedly experienced an 8.7% population decline, from a population of about 27,731 to 25,313.
Lately, officials say they have recouped a bit. Over the past two years From they have recovered about 1.3% of that loss. It’s still ranked as second in the state for population loss. Gulf County was ranked as number one.
