News Update for 8/8/22

There was bittersweet ceremony this morning as the Highlands County Supervisor of Elections Operation Center was officially named in honor of the late Penny Ogg. Ogg passed away suddenly last year following a brief illness.
The official unveiling of the marquee was held this morning at the operations center on Kenilworth Blvd.

It will be a double-header for the Avon Park city council today. They’ll start at 4:00 this afteronnon with a special meeting to discuss the budget for the upcoming 2022-23 fiscal year.
At 6:00 this evening will be the regular session. Among other things, they will set the fire assessment for the upcoming fiscal year, will meet with officials of Florida Airport Management to work on a pending Federal Aviation Administration grant, and will set the date for the annual Christmas festivities in the City of Charm.

South Florida State College has been awarded some $2,000 from the Grants-in-Aid Undergraduate Research program. The money has been designated for minority students in science, technology, engineering, and math programs at the school.
The funds can be used for equipment, supplies or research travel.
