News Update for 8/9/22

One man is dead and another arrested after an early morning shooting incident yesterday in Sebring. Police in the City on the Circle say the incident happened shortly after midnight at the Park Crest Apartment complex. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Acting on information from witnesses, Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies were able to locate a suspect vehicle and arrest a person of interest.
No names have yet been released. The investigation is ongoing but is being looked into as a capital murder case.

Avon Park city council members last night trimmed their proposed millage rate to 4.3681. That’s down from the proposed 4.5 mils – but still above the current rate of 2.24 mils.
In other action last night council member set the proposed Avon Park fire assessment for the upcoming fiscal year. It will jump $10 per household from $130 to $140 annually. The increase means commercial and institutional rates also will jump.

Lake Wales police today will hold a memorial service for their K9 officer Max. The dog was shot and killed in an incident last week off Martin Luther King Boulevard in the Crown Jewel of the Ridge. The suspect in the case, 57-year-old Earnest Borders was shot and killed in the exchange of gunfire.
Today’s service will be held at the Highpoint Church on the Scenic Highway beginning at 10am.
