Today is Labor Day. Banks and government offices are closed. There’s no mail delivery and no school. Motorists in the area are cautioned to look out for youngsters playing and riding their bicycles during normal school hours.
Many don’t perceive Highlands County as being a college town, but a new report from Porch, shows that the Avon Park-Sebring metro area ranks in the Top 10 for student housing. In fact, student renters here pay an average annual total of just under $5300 per year for off-campus room and board. That compares to a national average of over $11,000 annually.
That makes the Avon Park-Sebring area sixth overall for student renters. The survey says there are just over 2700 undergraduates enrolled locally.
