The polls are open in Avon Park for their municipal election and so far, turnout has been light. On the ballot there is the mayor’s seat – currently held by Garrett Anderson. Early voter turnout has been light in the Avon Park municipal election. Officials of the Highlands County Supervisor of elections office say they have had 277 mail-in ballots and another 156 early ballots cast – which is a total of 8.74 percent of the city’s 4,956 active registered voters. It appears the bears are on the move again – and through some populated areas. Sebring Middle School’s dismissal was interrupted yesterday when a small bruin was spotted near campus just before school let out. Students walking or riding their bikes were held up. Memorial Drive south of Avon Park was closed for a time this morning due to what was termed “a significant fuel spill.” Early reports indicate a pick-up truch rear ended a tanker at the railroad tracks just north of College Drive.
