Avon Park will get three new city council members this evening. Brittany McGuire, Michelle “Shelly” Mercure and Bernice Taylor will take the oath of office after winning last week’s municipal election.
It looks to be a long session.
Among other things, the council will look at signing a contract with Bird Rides, for the use of electric scooters in the City of Charm, consider a donation of the city’s 1995 fire engine to South Florida State College and make provisions for a number of special events downtown.

In their effort to attract new visitors to Highlands County, Visit Sebring is looking south of the border. The county’s tourism arm recently hosted a number of Mexican social media influencers and journalists who might tout this area as a destination point.
Local officials said the since Mexico is one of the most active countries for traveling, it only makes sense to showcase Highlands County.
While here, the group was provided hotel accommodations and taken to such places as Highlands Hammock State Park, the Sebring International Raceway, plus many of the local restaurants and bars.

Residents may see quite a bit oif smoke today from the area of Orange Blossom Estates south of Sebring. Officials of the Florida Forest Service say they will be conducting a 60-acre controlled burn off Lake Josephine Drive today – weather permuting.
The idea is to reduce the amount of ground fuel in the area as we head into the dry season.

A Lake Wales woman was killed when her car hydroplaned and spun across the road into the path of an oncoming vehicle.. The accident occurred at on Masterpiece Road near the intersection of Timberlane Road, in unincorporated Lake Wales.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Polk County Fire Rescue say 25-year old Candice Franz passed away as the result of her injuries. A 7-month old baby girl who was riding in Franz’s car did not appear to be injured.
The other driver, 47-year old Jeff Corey, was treated and released from the hospital.
