Increased lighting may be coming to Aline McWhite Park in the City of Charm. Residents of the city’s southside came before the Avon Park city council to ask for the additional illumination, saying there had been seven shootings in the area off Fred Connor Street – with four of them being fatal.
They also asked that the city put up surveillance cameras to help monitor activity there. They noted that a nearby church already had taken such action.
Mayor Garrett Anderson reported that all the lights in the area currently are working, but assured the citizens the city would contact Duke Energy to see what could be done.
Developers are running into resistance in Polk County. Haines City residents are trying to stop Center State Development from building over 19-hundred homes on 550 acres near Port Hatchineha [[HATCH-uh-nuh-haw]]. Neighbors say the project would harm their way of life, wild animals and increase traffic. One man tells ABC Action News when he looks out his window now, it’s like heaven.
A fire in Miami-Dade County is raising concerns about air quality. A fire started Sunday in Doral at the Miami-Dade County Resources Recovery Facility on Northwest 97th Ave. It continued to burn yesterday, and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava says the EPA has been asked to conduct air quality testing. So far, she says all tests have come back clear of hazardous materials. Those who live close to the waste-to-energy plant are asked to stay indoors as much as possible and keep the windows closed. Others are asked to avoid the neighborhood for now.
