News Update 1/21/20

The first blast of arctic air is set for the new decade this evening. So Highlands County officials have opened a cold weather shelter for those who need to stay warm.
The Bert J. Harris Agricultural Civic Center will be open this evening beginning at 7:00, and will stay open until tomorrow morning at 7am.
Anyone needing to use the shelter should know that the same rules and regulations apply as for those using the facility during a hurricane or other disaster.

Highlands County Attorney Joy Carmichael this morning bristled at numbers given to her for her second job evaluation by Highlands County commissioners. She first balked at having to discuss the issue in a public meeting, but then gave a rebuttal to some of the scores given out by board members.
She asked for revision of the scores – saying they did not reflect her abilities and service to the county. Commissioners took no action on her request.

It’s that time again, Highlands County Commissioner Don Elwell will be hosting one of his semi-annual, town hall-style meetings. It’ll be this evening at 6:00 and run for about two hours.
The meeting will be focused on commissioners’ priorities for the upcoming year and a pending resolution that would put the commission on record as supporting both the constitutions of the United States and the state of Florida.
Tonight’s session will be held at the university center of South Florida State College. Refreshments will be served at 5:30.
