A Sebring armed robbery investigation is expanding after detectives identified additional suspects tied to a February holdup. Authorities say new witness information led to charges against Jalen Wilkerson and helped connect several men to the daytime robbery of a gas station customer. The victim reported being robbed at gunpoint of about $1,400 after leaving a gas station. Surveillance video and a later traffic stop in Polk County helped investigators piece together the case.
Highlands County’s qualifying period closed Friday with a few new candidates joining local races. Educator Kari Pritchett entered the School Board District 1 contest, creating a three-way race. Former School Board member Andy Tuck is among three candidates competing for the District 5 seat left vacant by Nicole Radonski. On the Sun ‘N Lake Board of Supervisors, Stephen Kramer officially qualified and will face Beverly Phillips. Primary Election Day is August 18th, with the General Election set for November 3rd.
The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a recently reported scam involving two men posing as utility workers in Sebring Hills. Investigators say they may claim to be Duke Energy employees to gain property access or falsely promise to wipe out account balances for a cash fee or threaten service shutoffs. Duke Energy says legitimate workers never make such offers and always carry proper ID. Residents are urged to verify any unexpected utility visits before sharing information or money.
Hundreds of shelter pets across Florida are getting a second chance at finding a home this weekend. Highlands County Animal Services is waiving all pet adoption fees June 19 and 20 as part of the statewide Petco Love Florida MEGA Adoption Event. The effort aims to help more than 2,000 dogs and cats currently in Florida shelters find permanent homes. Adoption fees will be waived during regular event hours at the county shelter.
