Highlands County will mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks with several remembrance events Friday and Saturday. Friday includes a flag display in Avon Park, a flag wave at Fairmont Square from 9 to 11, and a public discussion at the Military Sea Services Museum at 1PM. The annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will be held Saturday at 8:45 a.m. at Fire Rescue Station 10 on Hammock Road in Sebring. The public is invited.
Sebring Driving Club is bringing some of the biggest names in endurance racing to coach members. Three-time winner Jordan Taylor kicks off the schedule September 23rd, followed by Ryan Dalziel, Johnny O’Connell and Patrick Long. Members can book 30-minute or longer one-on-one sessions, with the champions often driving their cars, discussing racing lines, setup tips and reviewing driving data. Six-time winner Tom Kristensen is set for March 24th.
Sebring is moving forward with sign-code changes that could benefit the planned BJ’s Wholesale Club on U.S. 27, north of Keiber Boulevard. The proposed 106,370-square-foot store will include three outparcels, prompting updates to city regulations. The Planning and Zoning Board approved the changes. City Council will consider them Sept. 15th, with a public hearing and second reading set for Oct. 6th.
A Lake Wales man is facing an attempted second-degree murder charge after deputies say he attacked his sleeping housemate with a clothes iron. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says 46-year-old Christopher Boudreaux repeatedly struck the man in the head, swinging the iron hard enough to break it. The victim remains hospitalized in stable condition. Boudreaux was arrested Monday and booked on a first-degree felony charge.
