News Update for 1/13/22

How much is it going to cost and who’s going to pay for it? Those are questions that Avon Park city council members are wrestling with as they determine water and sewer hook-up fees for the City of Charm. They’re in line to construct a new wastewater treatment facility, and have raised their charges accordingly to help pay for it.
However, that puts the totals significantly above neighboring communities, something Mayor Garett Anderson says is hampering the location of new businesses there.
Council members instructed staff to to a study of nearby cities to try and strike a balance in charges.

Are you looking for a job, or looking to change jobs? The Highlands County Career Fair will be held today in the Alan Jay Arena at the Highlands County Fairgrounds.
Adults will be able to talk with a wide array of area employers from 2-4 this afternoon. Ninth and 10th grade students will have an opportunity to see local offerings from 8:30 this morning until 1:00 this afternoon.
Organizers say interviews will be held on site, so come dressed for success with a resume.

It was on this date 15 years ago, a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper was gunned down during a traffic stop. Trooper Nicholas Sotille was shot and killed after pulling a car over on Highway 27 just north of Lake Placid. His assailant was apprehended and is spending life behind bars.
Authorities say the incident proves, there’s no such thing as a routine traffic stop. A memorial to Sotille remains along Highway 27 at the site.
