News Update for 1/14/21

A couple of accidents overnight have kept local first responders busy. Highway 27 was tied up in front of the Advent Hospital Sebring around 7:PM, when a car and an ambulance collided at Highway 27 & Valerie Blvd. Highlands County Sheriff’s officials say they have no details on the mishap – but apparently nobody was seriously injured.
Some Lake Placid area residents were left without electric service last night when a vehicle apparently clipped a couple of utility poles at County Road 29 and Holmes Avenue. Witnesses said the sky lit up just briefly, then the power went out. It appears the vehicle then fled the scene.

Crews from Sun N Lakes, Lake Placid, and Placid Lakes were joined by Florida Forest Service crews in extinguishing a brush fire yesterday. The flames broke out in a field off Harrell Road just south of Ben Hill Griffin Road.
Authorities say it was started from a ATV fire. No injuries were reported and no structures are were endangered. The blaze charred about two acres before firefighters got it out.

Officials in Avon Park say they have finally received an application to fill out the remaining term for the council seat previously held by Vice Mayor Stanley Spurlock. Former councilman Aljoe Hinson has filed his paperwork.
Spurlock died late last year, leaving the seat vacant. Those wishing to serve out the term must be a qualified elector in Avon park, and agree not to stand for re-election when the term is up.
Council will take applications for the post until next Friday, January 22nd.

A pair of Hardee teenagers have been arrested and charged in connection with what authorities are calling a per-meditated murder. According to reports, deputies were called to an area near Steve Roberts Special east of Zolfo Springs.
There, they found a person who apparently had been shot and killed. An investigation led detectives to 18-year-old Ernesto Angel Campos-Ramirez and 17-year-old Gabriella Graciela Garcia.
Both have been charged with numerous counts – including first degree murder. Investigators say the victim apparently had been summoned to the location to assist with a disabled vehicle. After arriving on the scene, the victim was shot and personal items were stolen.
