News Update for 1/16/24

Sebring city council members will get together this evening for their second session of the new year.
Among other things, they will be making plans for the March downtown celebration of this year’s Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring. They also will get a presentation and update on the Washington Heights neighborhood from resident Ada McGowan.
In other action the council will be tracking a couple of pieces of state legislation – one is HB 777 relating to municipal water & sewer utility rates and HB 569 relating to soverign immunity.
Highlands County commissioners were to have met this morning, but because of the Martin Luther King holiday observance yesterday, that session has been pushed back to Thursday morning.

A Sebring man reportedly was involved in an early morning traffic accident in Hardee County. According to Florida Highway Patrol reports, the semi-tractor trailer rig was westbound on Highway 64 just outside of Zolfo Sprngs, when he ran over a pedestrian that was laying in the roadway -shortly before 4:00 this morning.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. FHP troopers say at this point, he remains unidentified.
The accident remains under investigation. So far, no charges have been filed.

Once again, a part of Avon Park is under a boil water notice. There was a break in a six-inch main at North Lake Avenue and Raymond Street last night. Officials shut down that portion of the service to make repairs.
Citizens on Whitney Street, West Orange Street, West Raymond Street, West Sunshine Lane and West Kathleen Street now are under a 72-hour boil water notice.
To complicate matters, early this morning a motorist drove into a hole caused by the break and had to be towed out.

Last year, Florida District 35 State Representative Fred Hawkins gave up his seat to become the president at South Florida State College.
Today, voters in parts of Orange and Osceola counties will be going to the polls to decide on his replacement. In the running are Kissemmee Republican Erika Booth. She is running against Orlando Democrat Tom Keen for the post.
