News Update for 1/17/22

Today is the government observance of the birth of Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King jr. There will be no school today, so motorists are urged to watch out for youngsters who may be on the streets during non school hours.
There’s also slated to be a Martin Luther King Day Parade in Sebring. That will begin on East Center Avenue at the Pine Street intersection, then proceed up to and around the Circle to North Ridgewood. Then over to North Pine Street, up Lemon Avenue to MLK jr Street – ending at Washington Avenue.
There also will be a parade and celebration in Avon Park. That one is hosted by the Southside Community Resource Center will take place at The Martin Luther King Center at the intersection of South Central Avenue and East State Street in the City of Charm.
Both events commence at noon.

Units from Avon Park were called to a house fire early Saturday morning. The call came in about 1:45 to an address on Alton Street. The structure was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene.
Authorities say the house had been vacant for several years and there already had been termite damage and a partial roof collapse.
There were no injuries in the incident, cause of the blaze remains undetermined. No dollar damage estimate was released.
