News Update for 1/24/22

There is a frost advisory in effect for a nine county area of central Florida – that includes Highlands, Hardee, Desoto and Polk counties.

In addition, there’s patch fog reported throughout the area – some of it is dense.
Driving may be hazardous. Authorities caution drivers to use caution, and residents to watch out for pets and tender plants.

Avon Park city council members will again work on cleaning up the City of Charm when they get together in regular session this evening.
Council first will look at the reading of an ordinance that will update the civil citation method for code violations.
In other action, council members will hear from Avon Park Fire Chief Andy Marcy about the proposed purchase of a new command vehicle for his department.

One person was injured yesterday when a car went out of control and slammed into a palm tree in Lake Placid.
Apparently, the vehicle went out of control on an exit road of the Winn Dixie shopping plaza, and ran through the back lot of the WAWA gas station. It ran over a fence then hit the tree – which reportedly had only recently been planted.
The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment.

It’s been a year since Bonnie Johnson went missing, and Highlands County Sheriff’s officials say, there’s no indication as toe where she went.
Family members indicate Johnson had been the sole witness to a murder, and disappeared shortly before a scheduled hearing in the case.
At this point, relatives say they’re just looking for some answers. Anyone with information as to what may have happened to Johnson, or her whereabouts, is asked to call the Highlands County sheriff’s office.
