It may not be news to many, but the Sebring/Avon Park area does not show well when it comed to high paying jobs. A new study looking at affordable locations in America shows that locally, there aren’t many folks pulling down six-digit salaries.
The analysis shows that less than one half of one percent of the local population gets that kind of paycheck. Highlands has .4-percent of workers here making more than $100,000 a year. That compares to a national average of 6.4-percent of the population getting that kind of payday.

Three Florida colleges – including South Florida State College – will be getting funding to train students in what Governor Ron Desantis calls high-demand fields.
Governor DeSantis yesterday announced SFSC, Daytona State College and St. Petersburg College will split some nine million dollars to help fund students who want to enter emergency management, law enforcement, health care and education.
The money is coming from the Critical Workforce Needs Grant Program.
DeSantis says these are especially important occupations in communities after a disaster like Hurricane Ian.

The polls open tomorrow in Highlands County for this year’s election. In addition to the Governor, some judges and state constitutional amendments, one county commission seat remains up for grabs.
Early voting will be held at the Lake Placid Government Center, the Avon Park City Council Chambers as the Penny Ogg Operations Center in Sebring. Election Day will be Tuesday, November 8.
Some Republican officials are urging their voters to hold onto their ballots until election day to minimize the possibility of tampering.

A Fortune 500 company is expanding at a school in Polk County. International Flavors and Fragrances laid the foundation yesterday for a new facility at Florida Polytechnic University in Lakeland.
The Citrus Innovation Center will be a place where IFF can do research on citrus flavors and fragrances to be used in food, drinks and beauty products. An IFF official says it’ll be a beacon for innovation and excellence.
Florida Poly’s president says he’s proud that IFF recognizes the strategic advantage in partnering with the school.
