It may be a while before the lawnmower races start again at the Avon Park Mowerplex. City council members last night stopped short of signing a contract with NASGRASS, saying they first want an environmental study of the former landfill where the racetrack is located, to see how much, if any, pollution may be there.
Wes Pyburn, president of the lawn racers association, said they had investigated such a study but found it to be cost prohibitive. They also objected to a proposed month-to-month contract, saying such an arrangement made it difficult to plan their season.
Avon Park city staff was charged with investigating the matter, and bringing it back at their next concil session.
Polk County Sheriff’s officials have arrested an Orlando man in connection with a rash of burglaries across a half-dozen Florida counties including Highlands. 37-year-old Carl Dunlap was apprehended on I-4 by Polk Sheriff’s deputies.
He is accused of thefts in Lake, Sumter, Volusia, Orange, Polk and Highlands County.
Dunlap was booked into the Polk County jail on a long list of charges ranging from attempted murder to driving while license suspended.
Hardee County Sheriff’s officials say they are receiving reports of solicitors calling citizens and attempting to collect funds for disaster relief on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office there.
They say THOSE CALLS ARE NOT LEGITIMATE.
Hardee County Sheriff Vent Crawford says he has not authorized any organization to solicit funds on their behalf and is not requesting donations be made for a specific disaster relief project.
Authorities remind citizens – never donate to an organization without verifying their legitimacy.
