Lake Placid High, Lake Placid Middle, and Lake Placid Elementary were locked down for a time this morning. Highlands County School officials say it was "a precautionary measure," as the result of a student reporting that another student had made a threat.
All three schools were locked down due to the proximity of the campuses. Highlands County Sheriff’s officials were called in to investigate, but found there was no issue for students or teachers.
Time’s wastin’ for residents in the City of Charm to let local officials know what they would like to see in Avon Park. A community survey has been posted at the top of the Avon Park municipal web page, to allow citizens to make their voices heard.
The survey asks what kinds of amenities, businesses and events they’d like to see. Amenities range from more trees to an ampitheater. Business choices include health food stores, night clubs, and recreational facilities. Events options listed are festivals, fairs, concerts and movies – among other things.
In all, there are more than 70 choices on the survey.
One Lake Placid man was killed and another seriously injured in a Desoto County county traffic accident. Florida Highway Patrol reports indicate the driver was eastbound on State Road 70 when he lost control of his car.
The vehicle went off the road and overturned. Neither of the men were wearing their seatbelts, and were ejected from the rolling vehicle.
Troopers say they still are trying to find out how the accident occurred.
An investigation into an Avon Park burglary reportly led Highlands County Sheriff’s deputies to a cache or weapons. Long guns, handguns and a crossbow were taken in the incident.
Resident told investigators they’d seen a black Toyota pickup in the yard, a vehicle the homeowner apparently knew. Lawmen later found the truck at a Lake Sebring home.
After conducting a traffic stop on Kenneth James McLucas, authorities located all but one of the weapons. The Sebring man has been charged with counts of burglary, grand theft, among other things.
He was booked into the Highlands County jail.
Today is All Hallows Eve – or Halloween as is more commonly known. While some communities had their observances last weekend, the Town of Lake Placid has opted to stick with the traditional date.
The Lake Placid Halloween Block Party will go on from 6-9 this evening on Interlake Boulevard, in addition to candy – there will be costume and pumpkin decorating contests.
In Highway Park will host their third annual Trunk or Treat – that’ll be on Crestmore Street. They also will have contests and prizes.
The Highlands Baptist Church in Lake Placid will host a family fun night tonight with bounce houses games and other activities.
