News Update for 11/11/21

Today is Veterans Day and a lot of local tributes are planned to honor the men and women who served America in uniform. From 10-to-noon, the Highlands Tea Party will have a flag wave in front of the Fairmount Cinema Square shopping plaza on Highway 27. All are welcome to attend and wave their flags.
At 11:00 the Veterans Council of Highlands County’s annual Veterans Day Parade will kick off in Lake Placid. That processional will make a big square through the Caladium Capital, moving down Interlake Blvd to Main Avenue, then back up Dal Hall Blvd.
Also at 11am, VFW Post 4300 in Sebring will have a Flag Raising ceremony. The City of Frostproof will have a Veterans Day Observance. That will commence just before 11am on Wall Street and will feature the Frostproof High School Band.
From 1-4 this afternoon, the “You Served Us now We Serve You” Veterans Day food service will be held at the Avon Park Community Center – serving veterans lunch at no charge.
This evening at 7:00 the Heartland Pops will stage a free Veterans Day Concert at the Circle Theatre in downtown Sebring. The 30-piece orchestra will play traditional and patriotic music.

After a massive ransom-ware attack and months of work, the City of Avon Park now has a new web-site. In addition to the standard stuff such as a calendars, events and meetings, customers also may use the site to pay their utility bills on line.
Other functions include a list of current bid offerings by the city, job availablites and a wide array of community information ranging from area schools to news in and around the City of Charm.

A Lake Wales man reportedly was killed yesterday in a traffic accident in the Crown Jewel of the Ridge. According to reports, 58-year-old Brett Lang was southbound on Highway 27 near the Alturas-Babson Park Cutoff Road when he lost control of his pickup.
The vehicle went off the highway and hit a palm tree and a utility pole. Reportedly, he was not buckled up. Lang was airlifted to a trauma center where he died.
