News Update for 11/18/19

The Avon Park city council will convene this evening in a special session. They will take care of some housekeeping issues including the appointment of a Deputy Mayor. Jim Barnard has been fulfilling those duties. Three other candidates also have filed to be on a citizens committee to make recommendations on the appointment of a new Avon Park city manager.
In other action, the council will look at a change order, that will boost the price of the north utility line extension and will hear an update on activities at the Avon Park Boys & Girls Club.

There were no injuries, but there was quite a bit of property damage when a golf cart hauler caught fire this past weekend. The incident occurred Saturday morning on Highway 70 near Sun ‘N Lakes of Lake Placid.
The trucker was not injured. Reportedly all 24 of the carts and the trailer were destroyed by the flames. Damage was set in the neighborhood of $120,000. Cause remains under investigation.

Officials at the Polk County Schools continue to try and find the origin of a bullet found on a school bus in Lake Wales. The 9mm round reportedly was discovered by a bus driver after he dropped youngsters off. Students from the Lake Wales High School and Hillcrest Elementary had been riding the bus prior to the bullet being found.
No weapon was reported at either of the schools and Lake Wales police say their investigation is continuing.
