The Highlands County commission has a new chairman. First term commissioner Kevin Roberts was selected to chair the board for the upcoming year.
In other action, the commission gave their blessing to the proposed Aquaculture Work Program for Lake Istokpoga. The South Florida Water Management District program actually has nothing to do with commissioners, but they went on record supporting the program – which will be a test program for other parts of the state.
Without comment, the commission approved a new job description for the Parks & Facilities Director.
The Sebring Community Redevelopment Agency and the Sebring city council will get together this evening for a special session. At issue will be the proposed Pedestrian Safety and Lighting program.
They’ll look at a plan that could cost between a half and three-quarters of a million dollars. The session will commence at 5:30pm in the Jack Stroup Civic Center.
A Sebring man reportedly has been killed in a traffic crash near Lake Wales. Polk County Sheriff’s officials say the driver of a GMC pickup died when his truck ran into the back of a semi tractor-trailer rig.
The man’s name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Early reports indicate the 18-wheeler was making a U-Turn near Harbor Drive when the Sierra pickup hit the back of the trailer.
Preparations are geting underway today for the last big race of the year at the Sebring International Raceway. Competitors from Historic Sports Car Racing will start loading in their cars today for the Alan Jay Pistons & Props event.
That includes both vintage and historic race cars and airplanes.Special races during the weekend include the BRM V/GTC Endurance Challenge, the Stoner Car Care Global GT Race, and the Sasco Sports I/A Challenge and RS Cup Races.
Cars will be on track for test and tune sessions tomorrow.
It was a great kickoff for the Christmas season
in Avon Park last night as dozens of entries made their way down the Mile Long Mall for the annual Christmas parade. Organizers believe it may have been a record crowd for the event, which included floats, bands, marching units and other celebrants opening the parade season in central Florida.
There also was a holiday market, with various vendors set up along Main Street before the parade began.
This Friday will be the annual Sebring Christmas Parade, with parades scheduled Saturday in Frostproof and in Wauchulla.
