Highlands County commissioners will have a special workshop this afternoon. They’ll be discussing the proliferation of mobile home parks across the county and the future kinds of development here.
Commissioners say this is only a workshop for the board, and there will not be any opportunity for public comment.
This morning, commissioners added a number of roads to their reconstruction list, and observed the one year anniversary of Laurie Hurner as County Administrator.
Highlands County School District officials held their Summit Awards last night. Teacher of the Year honors went to Janet Harris of Fred Wild Elementary. The School-Related Employee of the Year for 2023 is Kathryn Church from Sebring Middle School.
Hardee County health officials have issued a mosquito-bourne illness alert following multiple cases of dengue fever there. Spokeswoman Kristin Casey said it was unclear how many residents had been affected, indicating "several" had contracted the disease and now are recovering.
There also are some other cases that are under investigation. The county has been spraying for mosquitos – and at least one more application is anticipated.
A Frostproof youth has been injured in a 2-vehicle accident just north of The Friendly City. Apparently the mishap occured when a gray Kia Rio made a left turn in front of an oncoming Chevy Pickup.
A 16-year-old Frostproof youth, who was riding in one of the vehicles, was airlifted to the hospital. Their name and extent of injuries has not yet been revealed.
The accident remains under investigation.
