AP COUNCIL

It looks to be a long night for the Avon Park city council tonight. They first will sit as the city’s community redevelopment agency and have a joint meeting with the CRA’s three advisory boards to iron out a number of issues.
The council then will hold the regular city council meeting. Tops on the agenda there, will be the selection of a candidate to fill the council seat left vacant with the death of Stanley Spurlock. Five hopefuls have filed letters of intent to seek to fill out Spurlock’s unexpired term.

Accidents in the south end of Highlands County kept first responders busy over the weekend. Both occurred on Highway 27 near the intersection of Route 731 near Venus.
Both accidents apparently were single vehicle roll-overs.
Reportedly, in the Saturday crash, the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was taken to the hospital. Yesterday, the driver apparently was not seriously injured.
That stretch of roadway is undergoing paving, which may have contributed to the mishaps. The Florida Highway Patrol has released no report on either incident.

A mobile home caught fire and burned over the weekend in Lake Placid. Units from Lake Placid, Sun ‘N Lakes South and Highlands Park were called out, and able to stop the burning before a “flashover” occurred.
Apparently, the trailer was unoccupied at the time. Damage was set between $10-$15,000. Cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
