News Update for 3/11/24

Today officially begins Race Week in Highlands County as preparation continues for this year’s edition of the Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring presented by Cadillac. Hundreds of fans are parked in the field across from the Sebring Internatonal Raceway – reportedly they will be let in tomorrow.
Historic Sports Car Racing wound up their sping fling at the track yesterday, and workers will begin transforming the 330 acre raceway grounds today in preparations for this year’s running of America’s Oldest Sports Car endurance race.

It IS Race Week in Highlands County – and that also means it’s spring break for schools. There are no classes for students this week. Motorists are cautioned to look out for youngsters outside playing during normal school hours.

It will be a double-header for the Avon Park city council tonight. At 5:00 they will hold a special joint session with the city’s Planning & Zoning Board to discuss the use of shipping and cargo containers as storage units around town.
At 6:00 will be the regular council meeting. Among other things, they are slated to take up the shipping container issue again for formal consideration and will take final action on revoking residential property inspection statutes.

Multiple agencies were called out over the weekend to help locate an injured kayaker near the Avon Park Bombing Range. Units from the range, in cooperation with Fish & Wildlife agents and the City of Avon Park worked together to find the kayaker – who was located about three miles south of the boat ramp.
No names have been released. Authorities only say that the injuries were non-life threatening.

A Lake Wales man faces numerous counts, following an altercation in the Crown Jewel of the Ridge. Perry Ford has been charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle and attempted first degree murder in the case.
Police say Ford and Duane Anderson apparently were about to settle a conflict, when the 42-year-old Ford opened fire on Anderson. Anderson fled in his vehicle and was not struck by any of the rounds.
Ford reportedly has been arrested up in Seminole County.
