News Update for 3/13/20

Officials from the International Motorsports Association and the Sebring International Raceway yesterday announced that this year’s Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring and associated events will be re-scheduled until the week of November 11, due to the onset of the Coronavirus.
As such, it now will be the finale of the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship series for 2020. Earlier yesterday spokesmen from the World Endurance Championship series announced they would not be running their 1,000 mile support race, due to the travel ban enacted by President Trump.
Track officials say all tickets and parking passes for the March race will be honored in November.

There still is one international race going on in Highlands County. This weekend, the annual Snowbird Nationals are being held at the MowerPlex in Avon Park. Lawn Mower racers from as far north as Michigan as far west as Texas – even from England, have converged on the City of Charm for two days worth of racing.
Festivities began with a meet-and-greet at the raceway last night with competition to run all day today and tomorrow. The track is located off State Road 64 on the west end of the Avon Park Airport.

Units from the Desoto City and Leisure Lakes fire departments were called out yesterday to aid the Florida Forest Service in putting down a brush fire. The blaze was in a hard to access area near the intersection of Country Lane and Henscratch Road.
The fire involved five acres and no structures were involved. No injuries were reported. Cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Residents are reminded – this is the dry season. Be careful with open flame.

Apparently, a call out from Highlands County Superintendent of Schools Brenda Longshore had some parents believing they could not leave the state. School officials are scrambling to clarify that Longshore’s statement that “currently all international and out of state travel has been suspended,” due to the corna virus – referred only to school related trips and field trips.
Authorities say they will post a Facebook video, with Longshore slated to clarify her remarks.
