A tragic incident in AdventHealth Sebring yesterday resulted in two deaths and caused the hospital to be locked down with emergency cases deffered to other medical facilities.
Highlands County Sheriff’s officials say it happened shortly before 11:30 yesterday morning when 66-year-old Joe Landon brought his special needs son in to the hospital for treatment. After he and the 23-year-old went into a mental health room, the son became combative.
At some point, Landon produced a handgun, and fired shots into a wall, causing a doctor and a security guard to flee. Landon then apparently shot his son, then himself. Both the Sebring men died at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
It will be an up close and personal day today at the Sebring International Raceway, as fans will get a lot of action both on and off track. Not only will there be qualifying sessions for participants in this year’s Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring presented by Cadillac, the teams will be holding an autograph session in the Alan Jay Paddock.
The Whelen Mazda Mx-5 series, the Lamborghni Super Trofeo and the Porsche Carrera Cup North America all will hold races, as will the Alan Jay 120 Michelin Pilot Challenge.
Even the classic cars in the Don Panoz Gallery of Legends will get another crack at the circuit in a parade lap.
This year’s Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring will kick off tomorrow morning at 9:40.
A pilot is credited with taking action to avoid tragedy after a plane crash in Polk County.
Fire Rescue officials say an experimental aircraft crashed yesterday in Fort Meade.
The plane caught fire, but two people inside got out and did not need to go to the hospital.
Authorities say the pilot’s quick thinking allowed them to avoid serious injuries while also not endangering anyone on the ground.
There’s no word on a cause. The FAA and NTSB have been notified.
A Hardee county man has been arrested on drug charges following a joint investigation by the Hardee and Polk county sheriff’s offices, in cooperation with Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Authorities have charged 41-year-old Derail Kenyon Snell with numerous counts – including trafficking in fentanyl.
In the investigation, thousands of fentanyl pills, handguns and cash were recovered.
