News Update for 3/25/21

Great news for those in search of a Cornavirus Vaccine Shot. Starting at 1pm today, Highlands County officials are opening the doors at the county’s Point of Distribution at JC Penny’s at the Lakeshore Mall.
The first 500 individuals who arrive and qualify will get a first dose COVID-19 vaccine.
Those 50 years or older, a health care provider or have a signed extreme vulnerability form from their doctor, qualify to receive the vaccine.
Residents must show a photo ID and completed consent form. Qualified individuals who do not have a consent form, may get one at the site.

Highlands County sheriff’s officials have released no new information on a fatal shooting incident in Avon Park. Killed was 18-year-old Sophie Jaden Healey with an unidentified 18-year-old man sent to the hospital with gunshot wounds. He was treated and released.
Detectives have not indicated what led to the incident at the South Lake Verona address, or if any suspects are being sought in the case. They are asking anyone with information to contact them at the Highlands County sheriff’s office.

Fire struck a home on Howard Avenue east of Sebring yesterday afternoon. Units from Desoto City, West Sebring and Sun’N Lake responded to the call.
There were no injuries, however an adult and three children were displaced as a result of the blaze. No cause or dollar damage estimate has yet been released.

Avon Park city council members are trying to sweeten the pot as they attempt to sell the Brickell Building. They are looking at changing the zoning of the place.
Under a new designation, the two-story Main Street structure could have as many as ten dwelling units They moved to allow the Central Florida Regional Planning Council to start the process of creating a planned unit development for the building.
